Project: Elegant Crystal Chain and Bird Bracelet with Matching Necklace

Chain Nose Pliers Jump Ring Tool I was recently interviewed by Fall Fair columnist Gillian Shearwater for contribution to her upcoming article in the AV Times. April's article is on accessories for that special Grad and the following contains her questions, my answers and some info with pictures of an elegant yet easy piece of jewellery that anyone can make. For the article I chose to do a piece for Fall Fair category “5L-09 - 6 Jewellery, any object”. I created specific pieces for this article because I wanted to show that a complex looking design can actually be fairly simple with the right supplies. The supplies used for this project are from a Vancouver bead store (crystal chain and 18’ chain) and Michael’s in Nanaimo (birds, jump rings and clasp). All supplies are available at Michael’s. I would have used local supplies but the crystal chain and bird charms are not available here; however, you can get jump rings, clasps and pre-made chain at Wal-Mart. I sadly miss our local Hobby Corner (sigh).

Gillian: What’s the best project for a beginner?

Me: For beginner’s it is best to keep it simple. You can still make a beautiful piece of jewellery and save yourself a lot of frustration by keeping your projects within your skill level. This way you can advance your techniques as you advance your skills. Trying to tackle a complex project can lead to discouragement and an unfinished project.

Gillian: What makes a project successful? E.g. design, finishing, appropriate materials for intended use, trendiness.

Me: Many factors make a successful project. Design, colour scheme, quality of supplies and execution of work can make or break a piece. I prefer to use supplies that are made of metal, glass, crystal, or stone, to plastic. They tend to be more pleasing to the eye, but occasionally you can find good quality plastic or resin ware. If you are interested in doing a jewellery project, make sure you do a little research first. Check fashion and colour trends or choose colours and designs that can be worn with many different outfits. This will give you piece more functionality and appeal.

Gillian: What cautions are there for making jewellery and related accessories?

Me: When choosing your project, I can’t stress enough the importance of choosing a simple project to start. You might want to start with a pattern or instructional video. Quality materials also go a long way in making a project successful. Discount supplies usually come with a discounted quality, however if you spend some time scrutinizing the product you can still get a few bargains. Discount supplies can be a good source if you just want to practice; however, spending a little extra on quality supplies can make a big difference in the result.

Gillian: Supplies: What are the best and/or closest sources of supply? Any comments on what is locally available through the dollar stores and big box stores? Any comments on mail order, or internet shopping?

Me: Quality supplies locally can be hard to come by since the closing of our local hobby store. You can find some items in the big box stores and discount stores locally. Internet shopping can be an excellent source for supplies, but be sure to check out the companies shipping prices, and duty costs for any items coming in from another country. Where you get your supplies really depends on what you decide to make. I like to hand pick my supplies from a variety of stores so I can see the quality I’m getting and I get a wide variety of supplies. I always have my eye out for things available locally and have found some lovely vintage supplies in our local thrift shops.

Gillian: Learning to make jewellery & accessories, are there any classes locally? Do you teach? Any internet resources that are valuable?

Me: Local classes are usually offered through our local Parks and Recreation Dept. Unfortunately I don’t teach classes yet, but maybe in the future. To learn how to make jewellery, look for instructional books from our local library, articles in magazine or on the internet for simple designs, patterns, and instructions. You Tube is a great place to find instructional videos.

Gillian: What would be a good project for an experienced crafter to expand their range of skills?

Me: There are so many projects geared to the experienced crafter. I really depends on whether you want to do beadwork, wirework, precious metal clay work or complete metal construction such as silver casting, soldering or riveting. Patterns and videos usually let you know what skill levels are required, beginner, intermediate or advanced. Don’t be afraid to play with new materials, experimentation can lead to some very interesting and creative pieces. I’ve done pieces where I’ve used fabric, ribbon, paper, and even guitar picks. By using your imagination, you can incorporate many unusual items into jewellery. Don’t be afraid to fail, even if a piece doesn’t turn out exactly the way you intended it, it can still be a nice piece. I always say that in art there are no mistakes, just creative redirections.

How It’s Made
This set looks complicated, but is fairly basic. It’s composed of the following pieces: 2 bird charms, 1 - 5 ½” length of crystal chain, 1 matching crystal drop, 5 jump rings, 1 magnetic clasp, and 1 pre-made 18” chain. Tools needed are chain nose pliers and a jump ring tool (see above), or two sets of pliers can be used.

The construction involves opening the jump rings, attaching the pieces together in the desired design, then closing the jump rings. It's best to twist the jump ring apart sideways (one side of the jump twists towards you and the other twists away from you). Do not pull it open or pushing it closed, that will damage and warp the jump ring. I hope you find this post helpful.

The Butterfly Project

If you haven't heard of "The Butterfly Project" then you need to read this. Leanne of RubyDog's Art House brought this amazing art project to my attention and I'm hoping that everyone will participate. So here's the skinny on it. The Holocaust Museum is planning a commemorative exhibit in Spring 2012 for the 1.5 million children who died in the Holocaust. The exhibition feature a display of 1.5 million butterflies, 1 for each child that died needlessly and they need your help. They are looking for artists of all kinds to create 1,500,000 butterflies and send them to the museum to be displayed. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a part of something truely meaningful! There are only a few rules such as your butterflies can be no larger than 8" x 10" and must NOT have glitter on them. Byhand Challenge - Crows

Well the Byhand Challenge has picked another one of my favourites and this weeks challenge was crows. My 4x4 art piece was created in Adobe Photoshop using pictures, brushes and stamps. My mini artwork was inspired by a children's rhyme that goes one crow sorrow, two crows joy, three crows a letter, four crows a boy. Unfortunately I've forgotten the rest.

What's in Store for Christmas

Well as you know by my previous post I've been busy creating for Christmas. I've had the last five weeks off and it is the only time I've really had to be creative. So here's a little taste of what I've been up to.

Note Boxes:
These are note boxes that have been painted, covered in fancy paper and embellished.The tops open to reveal a decorated interior and lots of note paper to write down your errands, phone messages or to-do lists.

Note Pad Holders & Wall Hanger:
In this pink grouping I have larger note pads and wall ornament. If the smaller note boxes are not large enough, these mini clipboard note pads should do the trick. They have three and a half by eight inch note pads. The wall hanging is mostly decorative but something light could be hung from the porcelain knob. It features a gesso print of a Victorian lady with embellishments.

Tag Photo Albums:
Next are some accordion tag book, pre-decorated and ready for photographs. They are made from chipboard tags fancy papers and card stock these books expand to display your favourite photos. Pink & Brown Photo Album

I'm getting ready for the Christmas craft fair circuit and have been making lots of paper creations. One of my favourite items are mini photo albums. This one is creates out of brown and pink papers from Making Memories and Basic Grey. I made a template from a match book kit I had purchased and them used whatever card stock I had on hand. I embellished the pages with strips of coordinating paper, fancy ribbons, cutouts and jewels. Then I bound them with brads. It took a long tiime to cut out the paper but the embelishment part was so much fun. If you've never created a mini album before, you might want to try it using a kit first. You can pick one up at most scrapbooking stores. Well that's it for now, I hope this inspires you to create.

Altered Challenge

Well this Tuesday's Challenge was altered, which of course I couldn't resist. i just wish I had more time to do something extravagant. However, I chose to do something quicker.

This week I took a packaging card from a set of Bindi dots. It had such a fancy gold and deep red border that I wanted to save it for some thing special. I covered it in cork paper with a gold fleck and stamped over it with Staz-on ink. I added a Madonna and child postage stamp and some sticky fabric letter tiles.

Because it resembled a tag, I used an eyelet, some wool and embellishments to make more tag-like. I also decided to make an envelope like cover that is made from red fiber paper and has a wax seal heart on the flap. When the tag is inserted it highlights the postage stamp.

Fancy Paper Challenge

Well they've captured my interest yet again at the Created Byhand Challenge, so I had to create something new. For those who don't know about the Byhand webpage, check my previous blog for the Quietfire and the Created Byhand links.

This week we were to use patterned or fancy paper to create our pieces. We could also use stencils, washes, inks, stamps, collage images, etc. to create ATCs, tags, altered art, or whatever we fancied. I chose to do a postcard size collage which I later mounted on black card stock for contrast and support. The fancy paper I used was retro circles which is an electronic background image linked together in Publisher and printed from my computer.

The Mercedes car paper was designed in Adobe Photoshop Elements 6, by creating coloured rectangles and using a collectible car image brush to stamp the image of the Mercedes into the coloured rectangle. I then cut out the cars to collage with. I chose the blue car because it was the best contrast to the pink and black retro circles. Then I cut out a cat head from a picture, and a black leather jacket from a magazine to add to the design. A few simple embellishments of silver wings and a crown, some sticky jewels and a "cool cat" sticker and the creation was ready to assemble. After some careful placement and a little glue, the postcard was complete.

I also had fun creating some more fancy paper in Photoshop Elements. For this paper I used two different images for the base; the retro circles image as well as a pink and black swirl image. I used a Photoshop brush of tiny leaves in pink, grey and black, and dragged it over the base images. Then with more Photoshop brushes I stamped a dragonfly in black and written text in white over the top to complete the paper. I haven't used the paper yet but I think it will make a nice background for an ATC, postcard or collage. Well that's all for today, I hope I was able to inspire you to create. Winged Things ATC's and More

Well today Created Byhand put out a challenge for winged things and that dragged me away from my textbooks! We could use pretty much whatever we wanted to create a card, ATC, tag, altered art, or whatever we fancied... as long as it had wings.

This inspired me to skip out of school for the afternoon (don't worry it's online school and I can do it tonight), and finally get creative. Wings are one of my favorite things to work with. You can create such whimsical artwork by using wings. I've put them on dolls, ATC's, recipe art cards, and even made stuffies into faerie bears. Yes you could say I have a thing for wings. You'll notice in wings on the front of my shrine from my May 11 post.

Today I was inspired to do a couple ATC's (artist trading cards) and an altered recipe card. The first was the Immaculate Heart of Mary ATC. Through simple collage and embellishment this ATC was quickly created using a 2 1/2 X 3 1/2 inch playing card, some scrapbook paper, a collage image, some sticky jewels on her crown and a couple of wing shaped jewellery findings. A little glue, assemblage and some distressing ink and you've got an ATC.

From there I moved on to an altered recipe card with Frida Kahlo. To create this mini artwork I used a small recipe card, covered it in scrapbook paper, and used collage images of Frida and butterfly wings. Her halo is a pleated ribbon that was retrieved from a garish denim jacket I found in my daughter's discards. I used rub on swirls, a black jewel and some sticky letters to complete the embellishment, then finished it off with distressing ink.

It's funny how when you get into an artistic zone, it can be really hard to stop. Two just wasn't enough, I wanted to do more, so I did. I decided to do a winged ATC, but instead of using a playing card, I used some blank card stock. I wanted the wings to extend from the card and a playing card just wasn't big enough to support the wings. To keep it in the ATC theme I traced the size of the playing card onto the card stock, then I covered it in scrapbook paper. I added a Pre-Raphaelite collage image and some dragonfly wings. If you look closely you'll see that they are upside down. I did this to give a flower like effect and not a dragonfly look. I embellished her crown an wings with sticky jewels and used an eyelet to secure the caption. Added a touch of silver highlights for some added shimmer and it was complete.

Not to bad for an afternoons work. Creating ATC's is a quick way to get your creativeness going. They're fast, fun and you'll be amazed at what transforms. I also wanted to include in this winged thing blog, something I did last Christmas. My friend Marlies came across a vintage optometrist's set at an auction and I was fortunate enough to be able to acquire a few lenses from her. Using collage images and scrapbook paper for the back ground, I collage the images top layer first (Mona, wings, then background) to the back of the optometrist lens. Then I backed it with card stock, painted the back it with metallic gold paint and sealed it with matte glaze. I wired the top with gold wire , a crystal bead and some bead caps to finish it off. Whenever I wear it I get always get compliments.

Collage and Assemblage Shrine

This shrine was constructed from scratch out of paper and chipboard. I constructed as a memorial for my family that I lost many years ago. The memories of my parents, brother Aunt and Grandfather are all honoured in this piece.

The gate holds my family memories in while Mary gazes down upon them.The wings were printed from my computer and glued to chipboard and highlighted with silver metallic paint. There is a hand wound music box in the lower right corner that plays green sleeves, one of my father's favorite songs. Wooden chess pawns that have been carved flat on top and inverted to serve as legs and a small medallion of Mary hangs from the gate.

Collage and assemblage is my favourite art to create. I have many creative ideas inside my head just waiting to come to fruition. Ah but time seems to escape me in this busy world we live in. Hopefully they'll take shape soon and be posted here for all to see.

Art Dolls

Art dolls are another thing I like to make. This one is called Medicine Woman. She is made from scrap fabrics from my daughter's fashion obsession. My daughter makes fabulously colourful, wearables, she is definitely a great designer, but I'll save that for another blog.

Medicine Woman's arms and legs are made from gold and red Sari fabric scraps from Vancouver's famed Little India cloth houses. (http://www.findfamilyfun.com/littleindia.htm) Her body is made from black satin and her face was printed from the computer on to iron-on t-shirt transfer medium and ironed on to muslin.

Decorating is the fun part! Beads, chain, charms, feather boa bits, and lots of brightly coloured shimmery, sheer fabric bits. Her hair is faux hair extensions that you can get in the hair accessories section of many stores or in the Halloween department in October. Medicine Woman's back is decorated with wings made from small black feathers and shredded bits of black sheer fabric. she even has hoop earrings made from wire jump rings. Her body was sewn by machine but the adornments were all sewn on by hand.

I've made several other dolls including Opal, (picture to above left). She was made in a similar fashion to Medicine Woman but has floral leaves as wings. I've made several other art dolls featuring the face of Mona Lisa, Girl with a Pearl earring, and ones featuring cat and kitten faces. The dolls can be made from any face you choose, even your own.
